Women's Hats - 1910s - 1920s
a-little-bit-of-tradition:
“The well known cloche hat was invented by the Parisian milliner and French fashion designer Caroline Reboux (1837-1927) in 1908. Due to the fitted, bell-shaped form of her invention, she named her hat – “cloche” hat, a French translation of the English word “bell”. The hat even shaped hairstyles and became especially popular during the 1920s, and continued to be...
Women's Silhouettes - 1914 - 1921
a-little-bit-of-tradition:
Leaner narrower skirts moving through wider skirts and hems shortening and lengthening again.
The start of a more relaxed and easy air becoming apparent in the costume silhouettes shown here.
Easier to move in, wider, fuller, shorter skirts with tiers, a raised waist and more ankle revealed than since the 1830s.
Clothes and hats also sometimes show a military...

I am often asked how I am able to get so much done so quickly when I draw and paint. I have a simple formula for “speed” in terms of working from life.
Speed = Accuracy + Efficiency
Accuracy is something you train to achieve by drawing, and specifically by doing exercises that train your accuracy. That can be a different post for later.
What about efficiency? This is something that...

Applying basic light theory to your art (aka "how...
foervraengd:
In this mini-guide, I’m going to more or less explain how the heck you apply basic light theory on your art. But with a bit more exaggerated effects.
I am going to start off by using a reference photo I took myself in a museum I visited the other day.
This is a piece of Pyrite (aka “Fool’s Gold”) which is very reflective, and is pretty cool.
I used this as a reference and...

this is for coolish who had trouble with coloring using overlay in photoshop to hir grayscale painting. I colored this very roughly in photoshop.
What you need to do is to use the LAB-sliders when you pick out the colors for the painting:
apparently, if at least ONE of these sliders (in most cases the one at the top) in in the middle, it should give of a color that is not too...

UPDATE: For photoshop users. Use the LAB-sliders in order to get the right value for the colors;
I think I’ve done something like this long ago, but that tutorial is not really up to date since I didn’t 100% understood this technique back then.
But tonight, I finally understand how it’s done.
And I know that some people out there might be laughing or be surprised that I...

Feeling suicidal? Can't talk on phones?
leskuh:
https://www.imalive.org/
Phones are actually really hard to manage sometimes when you’re super depressed/anxious/suicidal. Sometimes faceless/voiceless conversation is just… easier to handle. There was a time in my life where I was going through some really tough shit and I wanted to call a hotline, but the terror to do even that was too great. So this is nice. This is great.

People that act as if they're serious artists

artist-confessions:
wanting to be professionals when they do nothing but mediocre doodles and then turn around and whine and cry about their lack of skill and praise are fucking pathetic.
Sorry but I can’t take you seriously if your gallery is full of the same shit over and over, floating in blank space. No visible attempts at any sort of challenge or movement outside of...

Feeling sick today, so I’m eating lunch at my desk. So boredom led me to calculate the rough costs of how much it would be to attend a 2D Entertainment Art School that offers a “at least one year’s worth of full-time education with the intent to place the student in a 2D story/visual…

When Critiques Become QQ
uguubear:
So I usually try to stay out of Tumblr/internet drama, but I’ve been hearing this affecting a lot of my friends more often so let me just put my two cents in about this issue…
Critiques are a good thing to be able to give and receive alike. Although, it is as if the internet gives most people an inflated ego; it’s unfortunate, but that seems to be the trend.
Artists who are striving...

Yikes yikes yikes. That picture strikes me as more of an attack on a specific person than something with actual instructional value. There are better ways to critique than that.
I agree! I agree at obscene length. And now I agree in re-blogable form for convenience with some edits for clarity, underneath a cut.
